Te Rangi Hiroa

Just returned from a two and a half week road trip to the bottom of New Zealand,
We towed the teardrop camping trailer the whole way, sleeping inside and cooking
from the galley under the aft hatch.

On the way back I made a pilgrimage to Te Rangi Hiroa's (Sir Peter Buck's) grave.  The crypt containing his and his wife's ashes is under a 16' high concrete sculpture of a traditional canoe prow.
He survived being a medical doctor on the battlefields of WWI, worked in public health back in NZ, traveled extensively though the islands of the South Pacific cataloging their material culture, and eventually became the head of the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Of course his records of the canoes existing at that time and his book Vikings of the Sunrise are the most interesting to me.
